Integrating ChatGPT into English Take-Home Assignments
Presentation
Andrew Burton, a Marianopolis College English teacher, will present how in Fall 2024 for a fourth semester he will train his students to use ChatGPT to help them produce one take-home writing assignment; this assignment has been either a literary essay or a resume and cover letter.
To support students in using ChatGPT, he has authored a guide of roughly twenty pages, and he teaches a 100-minute class which features hands-on practice. His decision to integrate ChatGPT reflects three primary considerations: 1) his belief in the importance of continuing to assign take-home writing, 2) his perception that students’ use of ChatGPT can be compatible with and even enhance their learning and 3) his opinion that students need help understanding large language models, particularly given how they are being rapidly integrated into operating systems and office productivity software (e.g. MS Copilot). This webinar will end with a question period.
