Mentorship: Assisting Educational Advisors with their Professional Development

Educational advisors are at the heart of the curricular and pedagogical changes that occur in their respective colleges; they both influence and witness related developments. Today, whether because of a transformation, an increase, or a complexification of duties, the challenges they face are increasingly numerous. Some may feel overwhelmed by the situation. Take two such professionals from two different colleges, one just starting out, the other a knowledgeable past master. While the needs of the former and the experience of the latter could help them collaborate and mutually benefit from such a relationship, given that they are separated by distance, how will the novice learn, and how can the veteran share his expertise? This article explores a singular approach established under the PERFORMA program. Inspired in part by the authors’ own experience, this model enables mentees to explore issues in a more in-depth manner, find answers to their questions, identify methods, and enhance their practices. It will also help mentors share their proficiency with colleagues and bolster or renew their own knowledge.
