L’erreur, un outil pour enseigner, by Jean-Pierre Astolfi
2015 witnessed the appearance of the 12th edition of Jean-Pierre Astolfi’s L’erreur, un outil pour enseigner, a work first published in 1997. This small 117-page tome, summarized and discussed in this article, lists references that are vital for teachers interested in the didactic properties of mistakes and how the latter are related to learning. Don’t we all hope that what students learn will mirror what we have taught? The pitfalls that litter the path to learning in no way minimize this aspiration, this search for “perfection”. Astolfi urges his readers to renew their perception of what can be learned, encouraging teachers to change their existing perspective and confront it with a new difficulty: understanding their students’ mistakes.
