College Teaching Today

In this article taken from a lecture presented at a conference, the author brings out different teaching models and provides a detailed image of what it means to teach in college today. She believes that teaching is a complex profession that is not limited to giving courses and interacting with students, especially in light of reforms underway. Additionally, within this complex situation, changes occurs so quickly they are sometimes difficult to integrate: task modifications, contextual changes in practical exercises and competency requirements; the speed with which knowledge emerges, the constant renewal of knowledge and know-how; changes in the nature of interactions and the relationship to knowledge; questioning traditional teaching as new technologies modify many human cognitive functions; student diversity, and the shift in teaching from an individual and private activity to one that is both collective and public. Other teaching models are then presented, which are characterized by diversification and specialization resulting in new task sharing, such as on-line teaching. In conclusion, the author recommends developmental paths, divided into stages that promote professional fulfilment.
