Beyond Academic Success: Do Science Students Really Understand Chemistry?

Cormier, Caroline

Does student performance in chemistry courses actually reflect a true understanding of the discipline’s basic concepts? This is the question asked by the author as she highlights the alternative conceptions held by science students. The author has identified these types of personal views, which are not necessarily in keeping with scientific theory, by means of a test she developed in relation to subject-matter problems such as hydrogen bonding, chemical bonds, and vector addition.
