Attitudes and educational practices among college teachers

Chbat, Joseph

In 1964, the Parent commission recommended that, in addition to their disciplinary training, future college teachers follow mandatory pedagogical training. However, the urgency of the situation did not allow for regulation number 4 (resulting from the Parent report), which dealt with teacher certification, to be applied to college teachers. Since then, teachers of this new order only receive disciplinary training, having to acquire their educational expertise on the job. In this sense, CEGEPs served as a real laboratory for experimenting with assorted educational formulas and now, more than three decades after their introduction, various departments have acquired expertise that has translated into a rich production of pedagogical and didactic material. However, this noteworthy vitality found in many teachers in all college disciplines has not definitely resolved the problem of the initial lack of professional training and, even today, this situation raises a number of questions.
